In compiling a timeline of events in Detroit's Chinatown, I have chosen to include words and phrases written by journalists of both the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. Words or phrases in quotations do not reflect my personal views, but rather convey the perceptions of racial identity and attitudes toward racial difference during the period when the articles were written. My purpose for including these quotations is to indicate the changing ways in which the general public and people of power viewed, categorized, and documented Chinese residents.

Other sources include the Detroit Monitor, Detroit Saturday Night, Detroit Tribune, Detroit Journal, and Post & Tribune. Please see Archives for a full index of news articles on Chinese and Chinese American populations in Detroit.
