Major I-40 Closures in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee Due to Hurricane Helene

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced extensive closures along Interstate 40 (I-40) between Asheville and eastern Tennessee as a result of severe washouts and debris from Hurricane Helene. These shutdowns have significantly disrupted travel and transportation across the region, affecting commuters and emergency services alike.

Specific I-40 and I-26 Closures

Hurricane Helene has caused substantial damage to key highways, leading to the closure of multiple sections of I-40 and I-26.

Interstate 40

The following closures have been confirmed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation:

  • I-26 South of Asheville: Closed between Exit 49 to US 64 and Exit 53 to Upward Road.
  • I-40 Between Ridgecrest and Old Fort: Closed from Exit 66 in Ridgecrest to Exit 72 in Old Fort due to a mudslide.
  • I-40 Near Black Mountain: Closed one mile west of Exit 64 to NC 9.
  • I-40 at the Tennessee-North Carolina State Line: All lanes closed.
  • I-40 at Exit 20 to US-276: Closed.
  • I-40 East: Closed from Exit 4 to NC 191.
  • I-40 West: Closed from Exit 7 to Cold Springs Creek Road.

Additionally, on the Tennessee side, all lanes of I-40 in Cocke County are closed, further complicating travel for motorists heading into eastern Tennessee.

Western Carolina Roads Essentially Shut Down

NCDOT officials have issued a comprehensive warning to drivers, stating that “all roads in Western North Carolina should be considered closed.” This blanket closure highlights the severity of the storm’s impact on the region’s infrastructure, emphasizing the widespread nature of the disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the areas affected by the road collapses. However, transportation officials have not yet provided an estimated timeframe for reopening the impacted sections of I-40 and I-26. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of travelers and conducting thorough assessments before roads can be deemed safe for public use.

Impact

The extensive road closures have disrupted daily commutes, emergency services, and the transportation of goods across multiple states. Local communities are advised to seek alternative routes and stay informed through official channels for updates on road conditions and reopening schedules.

The shutdown of major highways like I-40 and I-26 not only hampers travel but also affects the regional economy by limiting access to key areas.

Emergency response teams are actively engaged in removing debris, repairing washouts, and assessing the structural integrity of the affected roadways. Coordinated efforts between state and local governments are essential to accelerate recovery and minimize the long-term impact on the region.

The priority remains to restore safe travel conditions while preventing further damage from ongoing weather conditions.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has emphasized the importance of heeding evacuation orders and safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Drivers are urged to avoid the closed sections of I-40 and I-26, follow detour signs, and stay updated through official channels such as DriveNC.gov and local news outlets to ensure their safety during this challenging time.
