Detroit's Movement Music Festival and the Origins of Techno

Every Memorial Day weekend, the heart of Detroit pulses with the beats of one of the longest-running electronic music events in the world: the Movement Music Festival. Hosted in the iconic Hart Plaza, Movement isn’t just a festival; it’s a cultural phenomenon that has become synonymous with the city’s rich musical legacy, particularly its claim as the birthplace of techno.

While techno music may not be one of the most popular genres by today’s standards, it is definitely a Detroit classic. Techno is as purely Detroit as Faygo soda, Better Made potato chips, or a Ford automobile. Techno is rugged, daring, and encompasses the industrial grit of Detroit. Every May, Detroit residents and tourists alike embrace the genre’s history and gather Downtown in droves to Hart Plaza for the Movement Festival.

Once known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (or “DEMF” for locals) and currently referred to as Detroit Movement. The Movement was created in 2000 and was set to become the first techno music festival to be held in Detroit, the genre’s birthplace.

The Detroit Movement Festival is a 3 day outdoor event featuring DJ’s from around the world, and is a staple event for many Metro Detroit residents. In fact many Detroiters have come to associate Movement with the beginning of the summer season.

Movement is almost like a tribal ceremony begging the sun to warm Michigan’s largest city. The pulsating beat mixed with the gathering of thousands, pays homage to both Detroit’s history of techno music and invites the warmest of the seasons. Attendance for Detroit’s Movement Festival has ranged anywhere from 82 thousand to over 1 million from across the world, and has featured both local as well as world renowned DJ’s.
